Our Unforgettable Fourth of July with Remarkable firework display in Rockaway Beach, Oregon
There are road trips you take just for fun, and then there are the ones that become family legend. This Fourth of July, we packed up and headed to Rockaway Beach, Oregon—a quaint little town on the coast that promised small-town charm, a big parade, and memories to last. It did not disappoint!

The Perfect Beachside Getaway
We rented a small condo right off the sand, drawn by glowing reviews and a longing for cooler weather. Our goal? To make new family memories—and Rockaway Beach delivered in every way. The entire town was decked out in red, white, and blue, from the shopfronts to the flower pots, and you could feel the festive spirit everywhere you turned.
Small Town, Big Patriotism
From the moment we arrived, we felt like locals. The community had truly embraced the patriotic theme—everyone, everywhere, was in on the celebration. The kids lined up along the main street (which runs parallel to the beach) for the annual parade. It was classic Americana: eclectic floats, local clubs, costumed kids, and candy flying everywhere. Storefronts were decorated to the nines and even the flowerpots wore their patriotic colors.
No one cared who was local and who was visiting—you couldn’t tell anyway. There’s something special about a town where everyone is welcome at the party.
Parade Surprises & Wiener Dog Races
Towards the end of the parade, someone handed us a flyer for a local wiener dog race at the nearby park. Naturally, we had to check it out—and I’m so glad we did! The event was a fundraiser for the local animal shelter, and if there’s one thing Rockaway Beach loves, it’s their pets. There were dogs everywhere—on leashes, in costumes, and all surprisingly well-behaved. They had Merch for sale and people were wearing previous years clothing. The park was absolutely packed—seriously, standing room only! The energy was infectious, and everyone was excited to support a good cause. This was obviously a standing tradition.
Even lunch was on theme: hotdogs, of course! The MC kept the crowd laughing the whole time, making the event as entertaining as it was heartwarming. The creativity and enthusiasm from the whole community were impossible to miss—they truly went all out. It was one of those unexpected moments that make a trip unforgettable.

Fireworks on the Beach: A Night to Remember
As dusk approached, we started thinking about the fireworks show. Unsure where the best spot might be, we asked our neighbor for advice. She just grinned and said, “Oh, you’ll see. There’s no bad seat here. Just walk out to the beach.” We took her word for it.
By 8 pm, fireworks were already popping off in every direction—even though the official town show wasn’t scheduled to begin until 10. We bundled up in blankets and towels (note for next year: bring chairs and firewood—it gets chilly!) and found a spot on the sand among dozens of other families. Up and down the beach, you could see little bonfires, hear laughter. We couldn’t even keep our crazy little ones out of the ocean even though it was so cold, when you’re from the desert something about the ocean just calls to you! they had to get their feet in the water and splash for a while.
The fireworks started slowly—a few here, a few there—but as the sky darkened, it turned into a jaw-dropping, all-out extravaganza. As far as we could see in both directions, the sky lit up with color. There wasn’t a single place on the sand where you couldn’t see a show. At times, it felt like we were in the center of the action—fireworks exploding right above our heads, the sound echoing off the water and the crowd gasping in delight.
My girls kept looking around, awestruck, and I couldn’t help but smile. Meanwhile, Sami, who has some sensory challenges, was having the time of her life—right up until one particularly close (and loud!) burst sent her diving under a blanket with her noise-canceling headphones. To be honest, I nearly joined her! When some firework “fallout” landed on us, I had a flash of anxiety—but also gratitude, remembering those who fought for the freedoms we now celebrate with all this light and noise.
Parental Terror and Grateful Reflection
Somewhere in the middle of all this, my girls started talking about how much their brothers would love it. The idea is honestly terrifying. We have a reservation with a firework shop near our house, and the thought of my boys—always eager for adventure—lighting off fireworks in a crowd of people makes my heart skip a beat. They’re like kids in a candy store when it comes to fireworks! But even as I worried, I knew this was exactly the kind of memory that would stick with them forever.
The Show That Never Ended
We never really knew when the “official” fireworks show began, because there were at least a dozen unofficial grand finales up and down the coast. At 10:30 we finally dragged ourselves back up to the condo, but found ourselves standing on the balcony for another half hour, unwilling to say goodnight. Even when we finally got the kids to bed, the crackle and boom of fireworks continued well past 1 am.
Would We Go Back?
In a heartbeat. Rockaway Beach on the Fourth of July is wild, wonderful, and completely unforgettable. Would I recommend it? Only to the brave and a little adventurous—ha! But truly, it was one of the best holiday experiences we’ve had.
Thank you, Rockaway Beach, for your warm welcome, your wild spirit, and a celebration we’ll never forget. If you’re looking for a family-friendly, small-town Fourth of July with a big heart, this is it.
