Unforgettable New Mexico Road Trip: Temples, Tramways & Natural Wonders
We just took a road trip to New Mexico, and I’m honestly not sure why it took me so long to visit considering how close we live! Here are a few of my favorite highlights and memorable moments from our adventure:
What I Loved About New Mexico
- Rich History: Museums are everywhere! They clearly love their history and education here.
- Stunning Blue Skies: The sky was the brightest blue I’ve ever witnessed—so bright it hurt my eyes, but I couldn’t look away!
- Amazing Storms: Visiting during monsoon season meant dramatic sky shifts from brilliant blue to stormy grey with thrilling downpours visible in every direction.
- Welcoming People: Everyone we encountered was incredibly kind and happy.
Our Journey Through Utah and Arizona
We started our road trip traveling through Utah and Arizona. Stopping at Glen Canyon Dam near Lake Powell was breathtaking. Though similar to Hoover Dam, the surrounding canyons and gorges were mesmerizing. The walkway on the side of the bridge offered uninhibited views thanks to strategically placed viewing holes in the chain-link fence—though the shaking from passing vehicles definitely made me a little shaky!

Farmington, New Mexico, and the Temple Open House
The main reason for our trip was the Farmington, New Mexico Temple open house. As members of the Church of Jesus Christ of Latter-day Saints, temples hold profound significance for us as sacred spaces for worship, learning, and feeling close to God. Farmington’s temple beautifully incorporates Navajo-inspired designs, vivid colors, and geometric patterns. You can see pictures here.

Albuquerque Adventures
In Albuquerque, we settled in, enjoyed some ice cream, and explored the next day. Despite a slight headache from travel and bright sun, a restful morning allowed us to fully enjoy the Sandia Peak Tramway experience later. The tram was amazing, offering breathtaking views and hiking opportunities. Remember:
- Go early to avoid crowded tram cars.
- You can hike one way and take the tram the other.
- Bring a sweatshirt for the top—it’s chilly in the shade.
- Don’t forget your camera!
Hot Air Balloon Museum & Old Town
Afterward, we visited Albuquerque’s Hot Air Balloon Museum. Initially, the kids were skeptical, but quickly became fascinated. Although we planned to explore Old Town Albuquerque, exhaustion set in, limiting us to a scenic drive through this historic area.
Warm Community Welcome
On Sunday, we attended a local church congregation in Albuquerque at 1100 Montano Rd, experiencing a warm welcome and feeling deeply connected to the community.
Carlsbad Caverns & Flight of the Bats
Onward to Carlsbad Caverns, where locals recommended the “flight of the bats.” Watching thousands of bats emerge at dusk was unforgettable, even though a storm disrupted the perfect viewing conditions. To ensure a better experience, keep quiet, avoid flash photography, and move minimally. For the best flights, visit in late summer or early fall when baby bats join the spectacle.
Inside the Caverns
Carlsbad Caverns themselves were astonishing. Despite a challenging descent (750 feet!), the views inside were stunning, capturing everyone’s interest, even our skeptical teens. Be prepared for steep paths and wear comfortable shoes. There are accessible areas, rest stops, bathrooms, and a gift shop—perfect for family visits. Carlsbad Caverns official website.
Petrified Forest National Park
On the journey home, we detoured through Petrified Forest National Park in Arizona, exploring the surreal Blue Mesa trail and petrified trees. It was a remarkable addition to our trip.
Final Thoughts
This road trip left us filled with laughter, occasional sibling squabbles, awe-inspiring sights, and cherished memories. New Mexico’s bright skies, friendly people, fascinating history, and natural wonders left us wanting more—exactly how a vacation should end!
If New Mexico is on your radar, I wholeheartedly recommend it. It’s already calling us back!
